Barbeque is a seriously personal issue, right up there with religion and politics. So I will not stir up any great debate by declaring The Pit as The Place for barbeque in The Fort. Let’s just say I found my new finger licking favorite barbeque spot at The Pit.
According to the “lore” of The Pit they cook their barbeque on the last of several iron pits built along Jacksboro Highway in the 1930’s. The Pit’s bright barn red paint and handpainted “Beer” sign show off their country flavored charm.
The Vibe
A wood paneled bar, retro fixtures, and gold spray painted western tchotkes make you feel as if you’ve stepped into the lair of some seventies hipster cowboy. Red checkered tablecloths and diner style chairs bring the look back down to barbeque basics.
The Pit features live music Tuesday through Saturday. Hank Hankshaw and his band crooned out some sweet tunes for our listening pleasure the night I went with my sister, Ari.
The Food
Ari and I ordered the brisket and hot link platters. Brisket is my go to barbeque item of choice. Though I hear from my fellow Fort Worth foodhounds that the melt in your mouth ribs deserve a tasting on my next trip. Savory smoky notes infused my perfectly tender brisket. A toasty and well seasoned crust welcomed me on my first bite. After one taste of the spicy barbeque sauce I promptly slathered it on the brisket. The sauce did double duty in disguising the few dry spots on the brisket.
The hot links lived up to their name and made our mouths burn after just a few bites. The decadently creamy potato salad was a welcome relief to the palate and balanced the spicy flavors of the barbeque.
The onion rings played a starring role during the meal. The beefed up onion rings arrived glistening like a well-oiled body builder. Half the size of Ari’s head, the onion rings had a thick, almost cakelike batter. Biting into the onion rings you’ll find the perfect ratio of batter to onion. These beauties make me want to abandon any hopes of a healthy lifestyle so that I can make them a daily indulgence.
The beer selection at The Pit includes PBR cans chilled on ice and served in a frozen pint glass. If you’re more Chardonnay than Shiner, The Pit rounds out it’s wine selection with local wine from the Lone Oak Winery in Burleson.
The Service
The service, though quirky, was top notch in friendliness. Tara, our waitress was a hoot and a half. All our food came out in time and with a smile.
Overall
The Pit gets my vote for hippest barbeque joint in town. I’m a sucker for gold spray painted saddles, live music, and a sassy waitress. The prices make this place a value, our whole meal with 2 beers was $20 bucks. Plus you’ve got the plucky charm of the folks who work there and who’ll be happy to spin you tales about the place.
