Cat City Grill – Opening Soon

by Josie on January 4, 2010

Cat City Grill is the newest restaurant slated to join the ranks of Magnolia Avenue’s Restaurant Row. According to the Cat City Grill website, the restaurant is a collaboration between Lili’s Bistro owner Vance Martin and former Del Frisco’s chef Martin Thompson.  Though there is no opening date announced yet, the menu is posted on the website and has my mouth watering in anticipation.

Starters are coined “Shareables” and  include Gorgonzola Fries, made popular at Lili’s Bistro.  A few exotic items such as Escargot and Plum Brie mix with familiar items such as Nachos and Fried Pickles on the starter menu.  There is a size-able steak section on the menu, the Tips and Spaetzle dish stands out from the usual steak options.

The Sauteed Stuffed Calamari dish listed in the Seafood Section sounds crave-worthy as does the Ahi Tuna Niciose.  Other notable specialties include Stuffed Cornish Game Hen and a King Ranch Poblano.

I’m noticing the lack of a dedicated vegetarian option, but maybe they’ll dream up something before the opening.  The prices fall on the higher end, with the entrees ranging from $18 – $29.  In the meantime peruse the website and check out all the delicious sounding menu details.

because nothing says “dedicated vegetarian option” like planning to open a steak house with a former Del Frisco chef.

I just thought it was notable since Lili’s offers vegeterian entrees for both lunch and dinner.

I understand your point, & I expect that most vegetarians joining omnivore friends at Cat City could find enough to eat from among the restaurant’s appetizers.

When I was growing up in the midwest, most restaurants had fish specials on Fridays for Catholics who weren’t eating meat on that day. Even today, in many restaurants the soup of the day on Friday is always chowder, chioppino (missspelled very badly), etc. Every restaurant doesn’t feature fish on Fridays, but enough do so that practicing Catholics have plenty of options.

Similarly, I don’t have a problem if a particular restaurant doesn’t have a vegetarian entree; there’s plenty of other places I can go.

My husband is a vegetarian and sometimes I feel like he gets the short end of the stick. Sometimes an app or a plate of sides thrown together just isn’t good enough. There seems to be some creativity going on in this version of the Cat City Grill menu-just my wishful thinking that they’d apply some of that same talent to a well thought out veggie dish.

Growing up Catholic I will forever associate Fish w/ Fridays-with Lent coming up soon maybe I’ll have to review a good fish place-Maybe Flying Fish, Zekes, or J&J’s?

I’m truly suprised that any restaurant, especially new, on Magnolia Ave would not have at least 2 or 3 veg entrees (not just salads) on their menu. Look at the successful restaurants on the strip (Yucatan, Spiral Diner, King Tut, etc). They know the neighborhood and know that this area probably has the highest concentration of vegetarians/vegans in the city. I love Lili’s and have confidence that Vance will come through for those of us who choose not to eat animals :)

We would love to have a couple of vegan options for when we go out with our omnivor friends. It gets old having salads & maybe sides (usually plain because they all have cheese or other animal products). We would be great cliens because we would encorage our friends to go there where we all can enjoy a good meal, (cuts down everybody stress as good friends always want us to enjoy ouselves too) and we are even glad to paythe $18 to $29 for a well tought vegan plate.
