Check each venue for times

What better way to celebrate the cooling weather in Fort Worth than to wander around checking out some art during Fort Worth’s annual Fall Gallery Night.

My suggestion is to make this a moveable feast of eats and art. Along with my favorite galleries you’ll find some suggestions for eats and drinks near each art venue.

You’ll find the full list of official art venues at the Fort Worth Art Dealer’s Association website. If you plan on hitting more than a few galleries map out your picks and start early so you don’t have to rush.

Artspace 111
This gallery on the fringe of downtown exudes artsy cool. Maybe it’s the old brick building with pleasing open spaces indoors, or the interesting outdoor area complete with a sculpture garden – whatever the reason count on seeing an always compelling selection of art. 2PM – 9PM. 111 Hampton Street Fort Worth.

Make time for a cocktail on the rooftop of the Reata before or after your visit to Artspace 111. You’ll enjoy a great view of Fort Worth along with some cool breezes.

If you’re feeling hungry, head on over to Ferre and try out Chef Sean’s “Small Plate Menu”. The dishes priced from $3-7 (anything from hanger steak crostini, mini pizzas, crab bites) should keep you going for your next round of galleries.

Fort Worth Community Arts Center
This place always bustles with activity on Gallery Nights. The Preservation is the Art of the City show and sale supports local artists and benefits preservation efforts in the city. FWCAC also presents 2 other exhibitions that make it a worthwhile stop on your list: Demeter’s Faithful Iason by Jim Burton and Reflecting the Ride by Rick Mullings. 10AM – 9PM. 1300 Gendy Fort Worth.

If you are looking for a Gallery Night dinner spot near FWCAC I’d look no further than Lanny’s Alta Cocina Mexicana. Lanny’s introduced a special “Back to Life” menu for September that features 3 courses for $40.  If cocktails call your name stop by Blue Sushi, Eddie V’s or Michael’s.

Gallery 414
Don’t be confused when you get to Gallery 414, it is a house in a residential neighborhood. However, inside you will find an always thought provoking selection of art. Their newest exhibition Reality Check features contemporary figure drawings from five up-and-coming artists: Tristan DeBoli, Elizabeth Fieler, Juan Garcia, Kristina Townsend and Tyler Zimmerman. 12 – 9PM. 414 Templeton Fort Worth.

If you’re looking for gallery grub near Gallery 414 to keep you going this one’s a no brainer.  Hit up Taco Heads or the Trough Burger Wagon’s tasty burgers in front of the Durty Crow.  Both within walking distance of Gallery 414. You’ll get some great, fast eats and have time to visit more galleries.

Velvet Box
Find the works of artist Marshall Harris at The Velvet Box (upscale adult store) on West 7th. Harris’ detailed life size drawings on Mylar were recently featured in 360 West magazine. This buzz-worthy show makes it a can’t miss. 5PM – 10PM 2917 Morton Street Fort Worth.

Once again we turn to food trucks for any eats you might need. The Crazy Sisters food truck will be parked right in front of the Velvet Box serving up tacos, burgers, and sandwiches.

Artes de la Rosa at the Rose Marine Theater
View photographer Shannon Atkinson’s photographs documenting over 40 of the Rose Marine Theater’s productions. Also get the chance to become a part of the exhibit when you meet the photographer and have your photo taken as a part of the “I Am Artes De La Rosa/Yo Soy Artes De La Rosa”. 5PM – 10PM. 1440 N. Main Fort Worth.

La Playa Maya within walking distance of the Rose Marine theater provides Tex-Mex deliciousness and margaritas. La Playa can get you in and out pretty quickly with plenty of time to hit more galleries.

Rebecca Low Gallery
Rebecca Low gallery features the exhibit “Aqua Flow” by Patricia Naylor for Gallery Night. Other artists include Nic Noblique, one of the foremost abstract sculptors in the United States, Rebecca Low, Conrad Quijas, Kent Maris, Matthew Patterson,Scott Peterson, Michael Sibley and jewelry by Dale Ousley. Don’t forget to take a stroll outside to view the sculpture garden. 1PM – 9PM. 7608 Camp Bowie Fort Worth.

If you’re feeling hungry stop by Salsa Fuego. My favorites here are the Fuego Burger and the shredded brisket burrito, they also have a drive-through for quick service. They also have a small patio if you’ve got time to linger.

Sinaca Studios
Don’t miss the chance to see demos in Sinaca’s “hot shop” as their showcase of glass art from 4PM – 9PM. 1013 Magnolia Avenue Fort Worth.

Yes! Tacos food truck will be serving in front of the studio from 4PM – 6PM. Grab a refreshing aguas fresca and an assortment of their delicious tacos.

William Campbell Contemporary Art
Gallery Night kicks off an exhibition of new works by Kris Cox. Past exhibits provided a unique selection of pieces and this show should be no different. The upstairs gallery features a group exhibition. 2PM – 9PM. 4935 Byers Fort Worth.

You won’t have to go too far for food by the William Campbell. The Wiener Man food truck will be parked in front of the gallery dishing out their signature hot dogs.

Hi there folks sorry for the lack of posts lately. I’m still around and still eating, my pen just has to catch up to my fork. Here’s a brief rundown of this weekends highlights. Hit up a brunch. Last weekend I went to Brownstone and had a fantastic brunch. $5 bottomless mimosas and a cooked to order menu that features Chef Casey Thompson’s take on Southern favorites. I enjoyed the Fried Chicken and Grits and can’t wait to go back.

The Road: A Photographic Journey- Opening Reception 6PM -9PM

Local luminary and photographer Jill Johnson shows her work alongside Billy Stone at Artspace 111.

Jill Johnson, Fort Worth based freelance photographer, has included images from her series, Tru-Vue. “This series of images on the back roads of the West Texas Panhandle was captured on a Hasselblad using 120 film. Billy Stone describes his panoramic photographs as “encounters of inspiring scenes along the various highways and side roads on his cherished road trips to New Mexico,” where he grew up.

Lots going on this weekend, so get out and enjoy all that Fort Worth has to offer!

Fall Gallery Night
A great night to get out and check out all the art venues in Fort Worth.

This is also quite the social event, so visit a few galleries sip some wine and take it all in. The Fort Worth Art Dealers Association (FWADA) has all the details for each venue online. Lots going on in the Fort this weekend. If you plan your Saturday strategically you could actually make it to Fort Worth Sings for Haiti, The Gingerman Chili Cook-off, and Gallery Night.

The Texas Gypsies give Parisian style jazz a Texas twist. From the bands Facebook event page:

Imagine this: you’re in a quaint Parisian cafe listening to a delightful acoustic jazz combo. The air is filled with songs, some familiar, some exotic and intriguing. You’re caught up in the music as lightning-fast guitar runs dart in and out of beautiful violin melodies. The rhythm guitarist is strumming his guitar with fiery abandon while the bassist slaps a rhythm that your feet cant resist. Throw in some Texas flair and you have the Texas Gypsies making a return visit to Scat.

Grab diner at nearby Simply Fondue, Cowtown Diner, or Taverna and you’ve got yourself the makings for a pretty awesome evening.

3rd Annual Chili Cook Off (benefiting Kids who Care) 1:30PM
This event celebrates Texas and what better way than with a Chili Cook-off, live music, and beer. I was fortunate enough to be part of the judging panel last year and somehow luck has struck twice and I’ll be judging again this year along with the multi-talented Louis Sheppard (chef, musician, writer), and the amazingness that is Dena Peterson (Executive Chef at The Modern).

Come stop by and say hi, eat some chili, and grab a beer if you’re in the area. You may also want to remind me that it’s not a Chili eating contest and that I don’t have to eat every single bowl of chili. Mmmm Chili!

Fort Worth Sings for Haiti 12PM – 10PM

If ever there was a worthy cause, this is one of them. Fort Worth Sings for Haiti is a huge benefit concert to help aid the people of Haiti affected by the devastating earthquake that hit in January. From the Facebook information page:

The event is sponsored by CLASSIC CHEVROLET and will be held at Magnolia Green Park in Fort Worth’s Near Southside. It will showcase an impressive lineup of the area’s most acclaimed bands and include a family fun zone, raffle and silent auction. Fort Worth Sings for Haiti will be held from noon to 10PM and is 100% free to attend, but all profits from donations, purchases and sponsorships will be donated to the continued rescue and rebuilding efforts of Doctors Without Borders in Haiti.

It’s that time of year again, time when Spring beckons and galleries open their doors. Not only is Gallery Night a free event, most galleries will be pouring complimentary wine and serving nibbles as well. Free wine and cheese along with art, I can’t think of a better combination. It’s a roaming party and it’s fun to see Fort Worth folks out and about. Get the full list from the FWADA website for all the participating galleries, museums, and businesses.

Some restaurants also get in on the act.  Grab some good eats and drinks at participating restaurants that will also be featuring artisitic works.

Tommy’s Hamburgers
“Warhol had Marilyn, Tommy’s has the burger”. Check out works by Tommy’s photographer B.J. Lacasse while you enjoy complimentary wine from 5-9 p.m.

Times Ten Cellars 2-9 PM
Welcome Times Ten to the Gallery Night circuit where they will be featuring local photographers, painters, and sculpture in their private space (Terry Cockerham, silent G imagery, Camille Green, Joel Kiser, Clayton Hurt, and Matt Clark). Meet the artists and take a tour of the winery while you’re there.

Winslow’s Wine Cafe
Stop by Winslow’s to view their Fly Fishing themed exhibit, Winslow’s will feature an exhibition of original artwork by several artists during Spring Gallery Night. The “Art of Fly Fishing” will be the theme of the exhibition and proceeds from the sales of artwork that evening will be donated to the Reel Recovery Program. Reel Recovery provides all expenses paid fly fishing retreats for Texas men coping with cancer.

M Lounge
If all the gallery hopping has you parched, the M Lounge has got you covered with one of their specialty martini’s. Also beer specials until 2 a.m. Thursday, Friday, and Saturdays $1.75 draft pints, $2.25 domestic bottles and more. $5 martini of the month.

Other sponsors include Ellerbe’s Fine Foods and Piola.

Now onto the galleries. It’s pretty hard to hit every gallery and museum, so I usually have my favorites that I make a point of going to.

Rebecca Low Sculptural Metal Gallery and Studio

The outdoor sculpture mini garden that complements the wide open light filled gallery make this a worthy visit during the daylight hours. Kids enjoy the whimsical and oversize sculpture pieces. This gallery is way down west Camp Bowie but worth the trek. Last time I went they had some jazz musicians playing, which made it a nice place to linger. If you find yourself over here around eating time head on down to the Japanese Palace at 8445 Camp Bowie West which just celebrated it’s 35th year in Fort Worth.

This old brick warehouse reminds me of a fringe gallery you might find in New York somewhere. Gallery Night will open the new exhibition by Linda Guy and Jo-Ann Mulroy. Also take in a musical performance by Los Noviembres frofm 6PM -9PM. Enjoy a glass of wine or beer in the outdoor patio area or stroll through the outdoor sculpture garden. If the light nibbles aren’t enough for you, Downtown is close by and there are plenty of eats around there but I would head towards The Stockyards and eat a quick bite at La Playa Maya on Main St.

Artes de La Rosa will be featuring the works of Pedro Escamillia as he examines his life growing up in the southside of Fort Worth and his love of nature.

Check out the delightful exhibit by Robertus van der Wege and his most recent body of work which use bicycles as the subject. Also look for the 2010 Biennial which is an interesting concept in that it is an open exhibit where all area artists are invited to show their works, this year over 400 works were submitted. Nearby eats include J&J’s Oyster Bar on University or Tokyo Cafe (review) further down Camp Bowie.

What looks like a house in a neighborhood off of 7th street showcases an always dynamic and edgy collection of art. This indie little gallery is another favorite. The domestic setting gives the place a house party sort of vibe and I love winding my way through the rooms to see what will surprise me next. Blue-ing Blowbonnets featuring Charles
Coldewey, Kazuko Goto, Paul Greco, Erin Guy, tesa Morin, Dan Tossing.
Fred’s (will also be participating in Gallery Night), Love Shack So7 (817 Matisse Ste. 445 Fort Worth 76107), and La Familia are nearby if you get the hankering for hamburgers or Tex Mex.

Studio 5
Erotic Art at Studio 5 5PM – 2AM

Studio 5 is the workspace/living space of local artist Jesse Sierra Hernandez. The old storefront building makes a great gallery space. This gallery also falls into the underground and indie category. Spring Gallery Night features Erotic Art from the minds of Greg Bahr, Chris Blay, Natalia Dominguez, Phil Hemsley, Jesse Sierra Hernandez, Tasha Mcghie, Pussyhouse Propaganda (Calvin Abucejo & Ray Liberio). Nearby Hemphill Street plays host to many hole in the wall Mexican taquerias, my favorite is Ernesto’s at 4050 Hemphill, it is BYOB and open late (run by the same folks who own Benito’s).

This gallery’s 30 years in existence shows in a consistently impressive selection of works. I always save this gallery as my last stop because I’m always blown away by what they show. Though they represent artists in various periods in their career, the artists they show seem to have a clear, mature vision and produce high quality collectible pieces. The new exhibit is by Cecil Touchon. Wind down at nearby Tokyo Cafe.

Funky Finds

Let’s keep Fort Worth Funky! Check out this indie art and craft fair in the Will Rogers Memorial Center (Small Exhibit-Poultry Building). Support your local crafters and artisans that will be selling their creations. Admission and Parking are free! 3409 Burnett-Tandy Drive, Fort Worth, TX 76107

Lightcatcher Winery

Jazz Sunday 4PM – 7PM
Get a jump on St. Paddy’s Day celebrating with some vino and Lightcatcher’s St. Patrick’s Celtic Bacchanal. I first saw Lance Jone’s work in the now defunct Gallery Art Cafe on Jennings about 7 years ago and his work still lingers in my memory-beautifully organic pieces that draw you in. I’m excited that he’s got a solo show here in The Fort. Don’t miss this one, this one will draw a crowd as Lance has quite a local following. 414 Templeton.

Make it a mini-gallery night with another artists opening exhibition. Greg Miller’s work consists of bold and eye-catching images, some have a slightly vintage feel to them. If you want to brave the cold temperature on Saturday, the Log Cabin Village will be holding a demonstration on Dutch Oven cooking. You’d be surprised at the types of food you can make in a cast iron Dutch Oven, everything from a main dish to a desert.

My husband and I are obsessed with cooking up some good gourmet grub on our next camp-out in our Dutch Oven, so we’ll probably be in attendance. Thrift Art Gallery Show and Auction, 2009

On the other end of the art spectrum, check out the annual Thrift Art Gallery Show and Auction. This guerilla art event/installation/happening questions what exactly art is and its value – the answer usually lies hidden in a velvet cat painting.

This event is put on by local artist Chris Blay. He collects and curates pieces of thrifted art then slates them for auction beginning at .50 a piece. The pieces get titled appropriately and sometimes are given an interesting backstory. Proceeds go to fund next years show.

Bring cash and don’t be surprised when the bidding starts to get fierce. If you’d like a “beverage”, the event is BYOB. dj Lo-Rez will be providing the music. This years event will be held in a warehouse, in true underground indie art style, bring a coat.
