Fort Worth loves it’s fro-yo. With the summer heat in full force many find cool relief in the soft serve folds of frozen yogurt. Throw in some fresh fruit on top and you have yourself a pretty refreshing summer treat.

Adding to Fort Worth’s growing fro-yo options is Yogurtland in Montgomery Plaza. Yogurtland is the newest fro-yo concept in Fort Worth. They are open already but you can join in their Grand Opening festivities on Friday June 25th from 6PM-9PM for yogurt samples, free t-shirts, balloons, and drawings for prizes.

If you are new to the “new” frozen yogurt scene here’s what you need to know. This ain’t TCBY anymore, the new fro-yo concept stores strive for fresh and modern decor with a hint of hipness – some even fashion themselves to look like lounges.

Some fro-yo stores use the “self-serve” concept. Self-serve spots have a variety of yogurt to choose from along with all sorts of toppings (I’ve even seen mochi at Yogolait) and you pay by the ounce. Kids love the self-serve spots but keep on eye on the amount of yogurt and toppings they are serving themselves otherwise you might end up paying $8 for your yogurt (unfortunately I speak from experience). Other spots use the “Full Service” concept where they serve the frozen yogurt and toppings for you.

Yogolait
A favorite self-serve spot that is locally owned. Nice loungy area with magazines and TV. Flavors and toppings of the week are listed on their website.

Spring Gallery Night 2010
Saturday March 27
2PM – 9PM

It’s that time of year again, time when Spring beckons and galleries open their doors. Not only is Gallery Night a free event, most galleries will be pouring complimentary wine and serving nibbles as well. Free wine and cheese along with art, I can’t think of a better combination. It’s a roaming party and it’s fun to see Fort Worth folks out and about. Get the full list from the FWADA website for all the participating galleries, museums, and businesses.

Some restaurants also get in on the act. Grab some good eats and drinks at participating restaurants that will also be featuring artisitic works.

Tommy’s Hamburgers
“Warhol had Marilyn, Tommy’s has the burger”. Check out works by Tommy’s photographer B.J. Lacasse while you enjoy complimentary wine from 5-9 p.m.

Times Ten Cellars 2-9 PM
Welcome Times Ten to the Gallery Night circuit where they will be featuring local photographers, painters, and sculpture in their private space (Terry Cockerham, silent G imagery, Camille Green, Joel Kiser, Clayton Hurt, and Matt Clark). Meet the artists and take a tour of the winery while you’re there.

Winslow’s Wine Cafe
Stop by Winslow’s to view their Fly Fishing themed exhibit, Winslow’s will feature an exhibition of original artwork by several artists during Spring Gallery Night. The “Art of Fly Fishing” will be the theme of the exhibition and proceeds from the sales of artwork that evening will be donated to the Reel Recovery Program. Reel Recovery provides all expenses paid fly fishing retreats for Texas men coping with cancer.

M Lounge
If all the gallery hopping has you parched, the M Lounge has got you covered with one of their specialty martini’s. Also beer specials until 2 a.m. Thursday, Friday, and Saturdays $1.75 draft pints, $2.25 domestic bottles and more. $5 martini of the month.

Other sponsors include Ellerbe’s Fine Foods and Piola.

Now onto the galleries. It’s pretty hard to hit every gallery and museum, so I usually have my favorites that I make a point of going to.

Rebecca Low Sculptural Metal Gallery and Studio
7608 Camp Bowie West
Fort Worth TX 76116
The outdoor sculpture mini garden that complements the wide open light filled gallery make this a worthy visit during the daylight hours. Kids enjoy the whimsical and oversize sculpture pieces. This gallery is way down west Camp Bowie but worth the trek. Last time I went they had some jazz musicians playing, which made it a nice place to linger. If you find yourself over here around eating time head on down to the Japanese Palace at 8445 Camp Bowie West which just celebrated it’s 35th year in Fort Worth.

Artspace 111 2PM -9PM
111 Hampton Street
Fort Worth TX 76102
This old brick warehouse reminds me of a fringe gallery you might find in New York somewhere. Gallery Night will open the new exhibition by Linda Guy and Jo-Ann Mulroy. Also take in a musical performance by Los Noviembres frofm 6PM -9PM. Enjoy a glass of wine or beer in the outdoor patio area or stroll through the outdoor sculpture garden. If the light nibbles aren’t enough for you, Downtown is close by and there are plenty of eats around there but I would head towards The Stockyards and eat a quick bite at La Playa Maya on Main St.

Artes de la Rosa 3PM – 9PM
1442 North Main Street
Fort Worth 76164
Artes de La Rosa will be featuring the works of Pedro Escamillia as he examines his life growing up in the southside of Fort Worth and his love of nature.

Fort Worth Community Arts Center 2PM -9PM
1300 Gendy Street
Fort Worth TX 76107
Check out the delightful exhibit by Robertus van der Wege and his most recent body of work which use bicycles as the subject. Also look for the 2010 Biennial which is an interesting concept in that it is an open exhibit where all area artists are invited to show their works, this year over 400 works were submitted. Nearby eats include J&J’s Oyster Bar on University or Tokyo Cafe (review) further down Camp Bowie.

414 Templeton
Fort Worth TX 76107
What looks like a house in a neighborhood off of 7th street showcases an always dynamic and edgy collection of art. This indie little gallery is another favorite. The domestic setting gives the place a house party sort of vibe and I love winding my way through the rooms to see what will surprise me next. Blue-ing Blowbonnets featuring Charles
Coldewey, Kazuko Goto, Paul Greco, Erin Guy, tesa Morin, Dan Tossing.
Fred’s (will also be participating in Gallery Night), Love Shack So7 (817 Matisse Ste. 445 Fort Worth 76107), and La Familia are nearby if you get the hankering for hamburgers or Tex Mex.

Studio 5
Erotic Art at Studio 5 5PM – 2AM
1018 Shaw Street
Fort Worth 76110
Studio 5 is the workspace/living space of local artist Jesse Sierra Hernandez. The old storefront building makes a great gallery space. This gallery also falls into the underground and indie category. Spring Gallery Night features Erotic Art from the minds of Greg Bahr, Chris Blay, Natalia Dominguez, Phil Hemsley, Jesse Sierra Hernandez, Tasha Mcghie, Pussyhouse Propaganda (Calvin Abucejo & Ray Liberio). Nearby Hemphill Street plays host to many hole in the wall Mexican taquerias, my favorite is Ernesto’s at 4050 Hemphill, it is BYOB and open late (run by the same folks who own Benito’s).

William Campbell Contemporary 2PM -9PM
4935 Byers Avenue
Fort Worth TX 76107
This gallery’s 30 years in existence shows in a consistently impressive selection of works. I always save this gallery as my last stop because I’m always blown away by what they show. Though they represent artists in various periods in their career, the artists they show seem to have a clear, mature vision and produce high quality collectible pieces. The new exhibit is by Cecil Touchon. Wind down at nearby Tokyo Cafe.

Texas Toast Tours
Foodies will want to hold off until February 16 to celebrate Valentine’s. Texas Toast Tours will be hosting a tour of Forest Park area Restaurants. This is a great chance to get an insight into these restaurants with special wine and food pairings with an explanation from the Chefs of Saprisiti, Ruffino’s, and Grady’s. All this and you are guided by the local diva of dining, June Naylor, and Texas Toast partner Cynthia Wahl. From Texas Toast Culinary Tours:

Webb Gallery (Waxahachie)
February 12, 7PM – 10PM
If you are a couple with artistic or musical leanings , you will want to take a little road trip to Waxahachie on Friday February 12. Take in the art of Esther Pearl Watson as her solo show, “Space is the Place paintings of UFOs and such”, opens at The Webb Gallery in Waxahachie. As a bonus catch the Darktown Strutters in an intimate venue before their self described “demonic disco” sounds hit the big time. Also the lovely DJ Wild in the Streets rounds out the entertainment for the evening. Afterwards take a romantic little stroll around the quaint, old square of downtown Waxahachie. Check out details on the Facebook Event Page. 209-211 W. Franklin Waxahachie, TX 75165

The Webb Gallery features self taught artists or “outsider art” as well as a vast collection of antiquities and bizarre collectibles that they have gathered over the years: carnival banners, fraternal lodge items, memory jugs, tramp art and many more little oddities that will keep you entertained. A little more about Esther Watson from the Webb Gallery:

Another artist whose work was new to me, Esther Pearl Watson, paints faux Outsider Art. Her Garland TX (1985) depicts a backyard scene with kids fighting, chain-link fences and trash scattered about the place. Suburban stuff, except for the massive silver UFO sitting smack bang in the middle of the lawn. Is her work a metaphor for the acceptance of Outsider Art? Insider or outsider, the scratchy imagery is engaging.Emma Gray, L.A. Confidential, Artnet

Esther Pearl Watson was also recently profiled on Boing Boing.

The Kimball
Friday February 12th from 5:30 – 7:30PM they will feature live music by The Tom Reynolds Trio. From the Kimball:

light dinner buffet feature a light dinner buffet of soups, salads, pasta dishes, and a vegetable torte, with a selection of wines and other beverages. After dinner, take a stroll through the galleries or settle in for some of the best live music in town in front of the beautiful Maillol Courtyard.

With Valentine’s Day arriving soon it’s that time of year to take a peek at some romantic restaurants in Fort Worth. During Valentine’s Day some restaurants host a prix fixe menu (fixed price menu) with a corresponding special menu. Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday this year so look for restaurants to be crowded with lovebirds all weekend.

Restaurants with special Valentine’s Day menus are noted. Keep these restaurants in mind all year round when planning anniversaries, birthdays, or other special events.

Lanny’s Alta Cocina Mexicana
Plus there is desert bonus with a Mignardises of Chocolate Strawberry Truffles. $95 per person. 817.850.9996 for reservations.
Bistro Lightcatcher

St. Emillion
3617 W. 7th
817.737.2781
What says romance better than little French hideaway. This cozy cottage on 7th is a great spot for l’amour. Food and Fort Worth reviewed this spot and the melting cake sounds like perfect date night food. Leslie Brenner of the Dallas Morning News also recently gave it 3 stars.

Sardines
509 University
817.332.9937
This Cultural district restaurant is a classic Fort Worth spot for romance. Candlelit tables are about the only illumination and live jazz definitely sets the scene. Classic Italian dishes complete the recipe for romance.

Pops Safari Room
2929 Morton Street
817.334.0559
The Cultural district gem has only a few tables nestled within aged wooden wine racks and that makes for amazing ambiance if you ask me. If it’s intimate you’re looking for, this is it. Trust the server’s wine recommendations here, because they are usually spot on. There is also a small casual patio outside. Read more about the food at Fort Worth Hole in the Wall.

Sapristi
2418 Forest Park Boulevard
817.924.7231
Want to pretend you’re in a neighborhood European bistro? You need go no further than Forest Park, Sapristi’s is the spot. The main dining room sports sunny yellow walls and rich wood accents (the secondary dining room has a bit of catching up to do). It can get loud but the setting is charming. The tapas plate varies and is a great way to start off the meal. The staff know wine, so I trust their judgment and am never disappointed, I’ve discovered some of my favorite wines here. Their mussels and fries are unbelievable.

The Italian Inn
I’d be remiss if I didn’t include this Fort Worth institution. The booths have little doors for extra privacy, it’s the custom to scrawl you and your sweetie’s name on the wall, if you’re lacking conversation you can always read what others have graffitied on the walls. There’s also the famous singing waiters. The food is standard Italian fare, but it’s all about the fun and romantic (if you get a booth) atmosphere at this spot.

Grace
777 Main Street
817.877.3388
Fort Worth’s newest hot spot restaurant also exudes romance with its rich and sophisticated atmosphere. Grace is an elegant spot for your romantic dinner. Luxury comes at a price though so bring some bank. Steak and seafood are the specialties here.

Simply Fondue
111 W. 4th Street Suite 15
817.348.0633
What’s sexier than dipping stuff in melted cheese or chocolate – I think that’s about as good as it gets. Simply Fondue is in the old Woolworth building downtown. Before you think this is your Mom’s 70′s fondue, they offer several varieties of fondue which include a Traditional Fondue, Fondue Grill, Mediterranean Sangria, Shiner Bock Bayou Cajun, and Thai Coconut-check out their website for details. If you want to know what you’re in for – read West and Clear‘s Kevin Buchanan’s excellent review, he found that it was vegetarian friendly and the photos that accompany the review are wonderful. After dinner head to the Scat Jazz Lounge and make a Simply Fabulous evening of it.

Nonna Tata
1400 W Magnolia Ave
817.332.0250
I love Nonna Tata, and though it may not be romantic to wait for a table, nothing’s stopping you from making out in your car while you wait. Once seated you’ll be transported to Italy with authentic flavors and a warm atmosphere. BYOB. Check out my review for all the details for dining at Nonna Tata.

Well it’s time to bust out your cowboy boots and western finery for the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo.
J&J Oyster Bar
612 N. University Drive
They make a mean Po’ Boy here. Oysters and gumbo are also signature dishes, wash it down with a cold one. The grilled tuna is as healthy as it gets. Kids love the popcorn shrimp. Casual atmosphere. Check out the menu on their website.

2933 Crockett Street ( at W. 7th and University)
Fort Worth’s newest hot spot puts a haute spin on cowboy cuisine making it a perfect spot to hit before or after a visit to the Stock Show. Check out my review for more details about Tillman’s.

Sardines
509 N. University Drive
Sneak in a little romance before or after the rodeo at this quintessentially romantic Italian spot with live jazz nightly. Expect traditional Italian favorites and don’t miss out on the crab stuffed mushroom appetizer.

Fred’s Texas Cafe
915 Currie Street
Grab a Fredburger with cheese and Fred’s handcut french fries. The Diablo burger is for the adventurous. The tacos are also tasty at this “divey diner” that was just featured on the Food Network. Now featuring a full bar.

La Familia

Montgomery Street Cafe
2000 Montgomery Street
If you get an early start on the Stock Show, the Montgomery Street Cafe serves up a fine old fashioned breakfast. Homemade biscuits and anything topped with gravy will be mouthwateringly good.

Angelo’s Barbeque
2533 White Settlement Road
The Stock Show and barbeque go hand in hand. Angelo’s is a Fort Worth barbeque institution and some say Angelo’s is the best in town. You be the judge, try out a combo platter and be sure to include ribs. Don’t worry there’s beer to wash it all down with.

Lambert’s
2731 White Settlement Road
Lambert’s is the perfect spot for all you urban cowboys. Modern decor with cowboy touches such as saddles from the ceiling. The food is unmistakably Texas with grilled and smoked meat selections. The t-bone with enchilada and sea bass are my faves. Small lounge area near the bar for enjoying cocktails.

Ol’ South Pancake House
1509 S. University
Another Fort Worth institution. Stop by for breakfast before heading to the Stock Show. Kid friendly as long as you’re there before the bars close.

M&O Station Grill
The Texas Cowboy Kitchen gives us a down home and upscale take on cowboy cuisine as well as a look at the history of the Chisolm Trail.

6. Yogolait
Even though it may be freezing outside, you may know someone that clamors for the frozen goodness at Yogolait. My kids can’t get enough of that place, they love the novelty of serving your own yogurt and toppings. This is a family run business and I love the loungy, laid back vibe with uber cool touches such as all the Kid Robot figures on display. A gift certificate from here would certainly come in handy on those random 70 degree winter days we’ve been having. 3250 Hulen Street #150, Fort Worth TX 76107.

7. Hot Chocolates
If you know someone with a serious chocolate obsession, you will surely score points if you gift them handmade truffles from Hot Chocolates in Hurst. All the chocolate confections at Hot Chocolates in Hurst are made on site, you can even watch them making it through a huge window at the entrance of the store.

When Russell Stover won’t do, you have to come here. Their adorable chocolate dipped marshmallows or gingerbread cookies would delight any child. They also have a nice assortment of chocolate themed t-shirts. Take a load off there and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate, perfect on a chilly day. 181W. Harwood Road, Hurst 76054.

8. King Corn Popcorn
I don’t know what it is about the holiday season that makes a huge tinful of cheesy popcorn such a welcome sight. Fort Worth has a great source for all your popcorn cravings, King Korn Popcorn. They have many flavors, from Jalapeno Cheese to Kandied English Toffee. These can be packaged up in any number of festive containers, making them an easy and tasty gift to give.
9. Donate
Let’s face it, times are tough for many folks right now and if you’re able to donate to the Tarrant Area Food Bank or any other charitable organization now is the time to do it.

I wish everyone the best during this holiday season!

If you’ve got food loving folks on your Christmas list, here’s some food and wine gift ideas with local flavor. Shopping Fort Worth area businesses helps our local economy and is a lot more pleasant than having to battle crowds and traffic at the area big box stores and malls. Here’s Part 1 of my gift giving guide, tune in tomorrow for more Fort Worth food-centric gift ideas.

1. Gift Certificates
A gift certificate to a local restaurant will always please any foodie and keeps our independent restaurants going strong. A gift certificate to the newly opened Tillman’s would surely be a hit (hint, hint, Santa!). Other good options include: Buttons, Lanny’s Alta Cocina Mexicana, Aventino’s, Paco and Johns, Lambert’s, Winslow’s Wine Cafe, Sapristi’s, Lili’s Bistro, Grace, Brix and Spiral Diner.

2. Cowtown Farmer’s Market for locally produced gifts
Visit the Cowtown Farmer’s Market and find a nice selection of gift items.

Wildflower Soaps carries hand crafted soaps made with natural ingredients that make for wonderful stocking stuffers. They carry a wide variety of scents that are sure to please.

Also make sure to visit Artisan Baking Company and pick up some cranberry bread and other holiday goodies like scones, cocoa mixes and homemade marshmallows. If you can’t make it to the Farmer’s Market you can always visit the bakery – more on that tomorrow.

Last weekend at the Farmer’s Market I picked up gorgeous potted paperwhites for $12. These make great hostess gifts. Some of jarred salsas and jams at the Farmer’s Market would also make great stocking stuffers or gifts for co-workers.

For the coffee lover you’ll find Arduro Bean Micro-Roasters at the Farmer’s Market with a nice selection of coffees to suit many tastes. The Costa Rican beans offer a nice medium roast and The Cowtown Blend is a strong, dark, bolder roast. Check out their website for all the flavors they have available. A cup of Arduro coffe is about the only thing that will make me crawl out of bed most mornings.

With a little creativity you could put together quite a nice gift package or stocking stuffers all from local producers – what a great way to support the local economy. Saturdays 8-noon. 3821 Southwest Blvd. Fort Worth TX.

3. Wine from local Wineries
Drive about 15 minutes away from Downtown to the pastoral Lightcatcher Winery to pick up some lovely bottles of wine for your friends and loved ones. While you’re there you can enjoy a tasting to find just the right bottle to gift. I was won over by the Texas Roads Merlot on my last visit. They can package up gifts as well, saving you some time.

Times Ten Cellars also offers a nice assortment of wines. The 2007 Malbec and 2007 Zinfandel left a great impression on my last visit. Now if you really want to wander down a wine trail head to Grapevine and you’ll find several wineries to choose from, here’s a handy list.

4. Tamales from Hot Damn Tamales
In my family instead of cookie exchanges, we have tamale exchanges. My family seems to provide tamales just about every week from Thanksgiving through New Years. Some are made by family members, some specialty tamales my mom orders from particular vendors. In Texas, tamales are an important part of the holiday season and food loving friends or co-workers would love you even more if you come bearing a dozen or so tamales.

Hot Damn Tamales on Magnolia Avene in Fort Worth provides a superior tamale. They differ a bit than a traditional tamale in that the masa is less greasy and the fillings are more on the upscale side. I’m all for tradition, but I love the “modern” tamales that Hot Damn Tamales makes. The vegetarian and vegan fillings are particularly tasty and not a version I can find at my Abuela’s house. If you’ve got distant relatives you can send a little taste of Texas by shipping them some Hot Damn Tamales. Check out the website for more gourmet tamale flavors and shipping and ordering information. 713 W. Magnolia Avenue, Fort Worth 76104.

5. Pendery’s Spice

In a small house on 8th Avenue you’ll find the world of spices that Pendery’s has to offer. Any foodie would lose themselves in the vast array of spices and blends – from exotic African Coast blends, charmoula, tabil, and tandoori to good old fashioned apple pie spice and chili spices. If you don’t know what to do with all these spices they carry plenty of cookbooks to get you started on a spicy adventure.

Gift baskets are available, but you could have great fun crafting the perfect gift from their amazing selection of goodies. The retail store is in the Medical District on 8th avenue. Throw in a mortar and pestle for grinding these exotic spices. 1407 8th Avenue, Fort Worth 76104.

6. Local Beer

Stop by Rahr Brewery for the Wednesday or Saturday tastings and pick up some gifts from the gift shop. Rahr glasses, t-shirts, and ball caps make great gifts especially when rounded out with a 6 pack (which can be found at Central Market). 701 Galveston Avenue, Fort Worth TX 76104.

The Covey Restaurant and Brewery also offers Covey Beer for a year, which for growlers is $120 for 12 months or Pints for $30 for 12 months. My favorite is the Horned Frog Pale Ale. 3010 South Hulen Street, Fort Worth. 817-731-7933.

7. Cooking Class from Central Market
This is a great gift if you have someone on your list that seems to have everything or is just plain hard to shop for. Anyone from a newbie cook to a seasoned gourmand will appreciate the opportunity to learn how to roll sushi, make pasta, or bread. Some classes are less hands on, where you observe a local chef preparing dishes that you sample along with wine pairings. Check the Central Market Cooking School schedule to select a class. Best of all, you can purchase online.

Over the years independent restaurants have moved into unused storefronts and gas stations and turned them into some of the most unique dining spots in Fort Worth.

Each restaurant serves a distinct cuisine and has helped Magnolia emerge as a true restaurant row in Fort Worth. Whatever type of food you may be in the mood for, chances are you’ll find it along Magnolia. Add in some other independent businesses like Panther City Bikes and the soon to be opened The Usual (a bar specializing in Prohibition Era Cocktails) and you’ve got quite the indie scene developing as well.

I thought I’d highlight the eateries on Magnolia Avenue with a series of mini-reviews. If you haven’t been to Magnolia Avenue in Fort Worth through this series perhaps you’ll find a restaurant that suits your tastes so that you can be a part of supporting this growing area in Fort Worth.

Formerly Tim Love’s Duce, Efrain Benitez has made this Westside spot his own by serving up classic cuisine with Meditteranean and Mexican touches. Butter lettuce salad, Ensalada Toscana, or a Shrimp and Corn bisque start off the meal. The Salmon Fuego topped with Crab meat and pico de gallo in a lime butter sauce sounds like an appealing Mexican twist to a standard dish. Grilled New Zealand Rack of Lamb, Crusted Filet Mignon, Stuffed Chicken Breast, Eggplant Parmagiano, and Heart Shaped Lobster Ravioli (aw how sweet) are the other main course options. Desert includes chocolate covered strawberries, Aji Chocolate Cake, Tres leches cake (mmm), and Cheese cake with Rasberry Sauce.

St. Emillion
3617 W. 7th
817.737.2781
What says romance better than little French hideaway. This cozy cottage on 7th is a great spot for l’amour. Food and Fort Worth reviewed this spot and the melting cake sounds like perfect date night food.

Bistro LightCatcher
6925 Confederate Park Road
817.237.2626
By the time this is posted they may be already full for their Valentine’s Day dinner. However, Bistro LightCatcher, part of the LightCatcher Winery is a beautiful setting for a special evening. Beautiful food presented in the presence of wine aging in barrels – Hello! that’s romantic! There’s also an outdoor terrace and pavilion.
