The Belgium Waffle Company and Chi’lantro are Austin trucks that sound particularly enticing.

I attended the Barrett Havran Memorial Big Taste of Fort Worth this past Sunday at The Omni Hotel and I think I’m just now recovering from all the food. Whew! So many of Fort Worth’s favorite restaurants provided tastings of some delicious dishes. The event benefited Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Unfortunately juggling plates of food and a beverage didn’t allow me to take as many photos as I would’ve liked but I managed to get a few shots during the event. Also, the participating restaurants are too numerous to list for my tired typing hands but I will mention a few of my favorites. The Tavern, one of my favorite spots, presented an exquisite dish of smoked salmon and wild rice salad.

Chef Juan Rodriguez of The Reata manned a giant sizzling platter of meat (I’m sorry I forget what kind) that topped some addictive white cheese grits with a cilantro microgreen garnish.

A surprisingly good dish came from The Ridglea Country Club. Since I’m far from the country club type I was not familiar with their food. But they served some shredded beef on toasted lavash bread that could be topped with toppings from a topping bar that included queso fresco (my favorite). The meat topping a crispy base was a popular theme and Hacienda San Miguel served up a similar dish, theirs was topped with panela cheese and came on a bite size nacho. Monty’s Corner delivered the most delicious short ribs I’ve tasted in awhile. I haven’t yet visited them in Montgomery Plaza but they just moved up my list.

Chadra Mezza made their first appearance at Big Taste and they brought some bold, big flavors with them. Their cinnamon and almond rice provided an unexpectedly welcome departure from some of the meaty fare. They also ended up winning Best Culinary Presentation. Here, you can see why.

Other winners of the evening were:
Best of Big Taste – Michael’s Restaurant & Ancho Chile Bar
People’s Choice – Wildcatter Steakhouse
Best Kickin’ Décor – Eddie V’s
Best Wine of Big Taste – Carriage House by Côtes Bonneville and Hear Hear! Wine & Spirits

Congratulations, to all who participated in such a worthwhile event. I look forward to next year’s Big Taste!

*An occasional nod to good food in Dallas that’s worth the drive

Bolsa
If you ever find yourself in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas do yourself a favor and check out Bolsa. Their emphasis on fresh, local and seasonal ingredients drew me to eat there. Bolsa’s food proved worthy of the drive from Fort Worth. The menu changes often based on available ingredients.

When you walk into Bolsa you will find an eclectic, yet polished vibe. The patio feels decidedly more casual and is my preferred place to dine. Even on brisk nights the patio is pleasant with the heaters on.

I’m not letting you in on any big secret. This well-loved spot draws a crowd so expect a bit of a wait for weekend dinners and brunch (they don’t take reservations). Order up one of their expertly crafted cocktails while you wait.

Keep your service expectations low. The staff seems indifferent and slow but the food makes it all worth it. I did notice a slight improvement during brunch service versus dinner.

I most recently visited Bolsa for brunch with my mom and sister. Ordering the bruschetta tasting for dinner or brunch seems de rigeur. The toppings change often and showcase local and seasonal ingredients. Our favorite was the Proscuitto with medjool date compote and white bean puree but the Fuji apple and toasted almond bruschetta and the smoked salmon bruschetta were also delicious.

I’m a huge fan of brisket so I ordered the Brisket and Egg. With the fried egg on top my dish looked almost too pretty to eat. Once I did cut into the dish the yolk from the fried egg gave a nice rich finish to the flavors on the plate. The brisket was fork tender and the accompanying veggies tasted slow cooked as well.

The humble egg sandwich gets a major makeover at Bolsa. Their version begins with artisanal bread topped with thick cut bacon, farm fresh eggs, and arugula. Then they top it all off with roasted piquillo peppers. The result is one sloppily good sandwich!

You’ll find the cocktails to be another big component of the Bolsa experience. On Wednesdays they host a popular $5 cocktail challenge night. They take requests for ingredients on their Facebook page and then on Wednesday they use those ingredients along with a premium liquor. Bolsa’s most recent cocktail challenge used Pisco Porton in combination with raspberry syrup, cucumber, lemon, and ginger beer to make a “Pink Pepino”.

Bolsa Mercado

After you’ve enjoyed a drink or a meal at Bolsa make sure to stroll over to Bolsa Mercado next door to Bolsa. But only if you love food. I mean really, really love food. Your head will explode at the curated selection of gourmet goodies here.

This boutique grocery store carries freshly prepared foods, wine, beer, and a delightful selection of packaged goods.

They also serve coffee and pastries and there are several cozy spots to enjoy them in the store.

I recently came back from a trip to Spain where most of my meals consisted of various tapas dishes. Tapas describe any small dish that’s meant as an appetizer or a snack. If you eat enough of them they can make up a whole meal. Sharing different small dishes rather than focusing on finishing one main course leaves lots of room for conversation and socializing. Throw in a little vino or cerveza and a round of tapas turns into a mini-party.

I didn’t have to think too hard to come up with a spot in Fort Worth that embodied this spirit. Shinjuku Station with its Izakaya concept serves small portion Japanese dishes that are meant to be shared. Izakaya is the Japanese equivalent of a Spanish tapas bar.

The small dishes at Shinjuku inspire conversation because of their creativity and unique flavors. You’ll find yourself cajoling your friends into trying each dish so that they can join you on a flavor journey. And it is quite a journey – you won’t find standard Japanese fare here. But that’s no reason to shy away. The staff provide lots of advice, suggestions, and answers to questions. The dishes range from deceptively simple to layered and complex.

For starters the stir-fried edamame comes sprinkled with some sort of addictive blend of spices that makes two orders essential. The hand made pork gyoza also leaves you wanting more. But slow down. You have to pace yourself so that you can try as many menu items as possible.

Shinjuku’s hokkaido scallops and tuna tartare should win a prize on appearances alone. Luckily the flavors live up to their good looks. Thinly sliced fried lotus root makes a beautiful base for tuna tartare and a pinch of scallops. These were a favorite of the table.

If you’re not into raw seafood try the delicately fried tempura king crab. The light batter provides a nice added texture to the delicious crab. Pair this with the foil wrapped wild Japanese mushrooms. Don’t let the appearances dissuade you, there’s a wonderfully deep and complex flavor in the mushrooms and the delicate brown butter sauce.

The sake steamed black mussels in yuzu butter are a “must-order” item. Just make sure to order a side of steamed rice so none of the tasty broth the mussels swim in goes to waste. The mussels are perfectly prepared and the broth manages to be rich and light at the same time.

The “Japanese Pizza” or Okonomiyake delivers a Momofuku-esque creation that unexpectedly combines flavors and textures. The base of the “pizza” contains shredded cabbage and egg. The pork belly topping comes through distinctly and makes for a very rich bite. If that’s not enough the bonito flakes that top the dish seem to be “dancing” on the pizza when it’s served to you.

On another visit we added some sushi to the mix. I loved the presentation of the spicy tuna hand roll in a little wooden stand.

We also ordered a roll and the special of that evening, toro tuna. The sushi tastes unbelievably fresh and the flavors were spot on. The rolls mixed in quite nicely with the other cooked dishes because they were easy to share. The only slight disappointment was the toro which didn’t quite live up to our expectations.

Our meals paired nicely with Kirin Ichiban beer and Shinjuku-Ritas.

Shinjuku Station provides Fort Worth with a unique dining experience in an understatedly cool space. My meals at Shinjuku Station with friends have been a joyful journey of discovery as each dish presented us with a culinary surprise. Going with friends is the best way to sample all the dishes. However, Shinjuku Station also has an intimate vibe inside the restaurant and a fabulous patio that would make it a great date spot.

January 13 – February 4, 2012

This is the last full weekend to check out the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo which runs until February 4, 2012. My family and I visited last weekend and had a great time. This year the Stock Show has a free app for smartphones which provides helpful maps and schedules of the daily events.

We started off with the Rodeo at 10AM and then worked our way through all the exhibit halls. I’m as “city mouse” as it gets but it was fun to check out all the livestock and I especially loved seeing all the different varieties of roosters and chickens.

Of course you won’t go hungry at The Stock Show there’s food and snacks and beverages at every turn. We enjoyed our fair share of corn dogs, burgers, and funnel cakes. If you’re looking for a spot to eat nearby pre or post Stock Show or Rodeo check out my handy list of spots.

*As of March 7,2012 Lambert’s is closed. I have heard that they are relocating but nothing that can be confirmed yet.

They say everything is bigger in Texas and that’s certainly true of the brunch at Lamberts. Lambert’s brings it big for brunch. I dare say it’s one of the best brunches in Fort Worth.

I’ve reviewed Lambert’s before and I’m a fan of their bold Texas cuisine. If you haven’t visited Lambert’s before you’ll find familiar Texas and Southern dishes given a little twist.

The unique brunch set up at Lambert’s makes it a standout and will guarantee you won’t leave hungry. During brunch you can choose from buffet items as well as order off their brunch menu, all included in the brunch price of $24.99. For a few extra bucks you can even get bottomless mimosas.

You’ll find the buffet items laid out in a rustically casual way. The buffet items on my visit included fresh fruit and salad. But forget that healthy stuff when you can pile your plate with some of the best migas I’ve tasted, bacon, roasted potatoes, and excellent prime rib at the carving station.

The buffet items will hold you over while you wait for any items you’ve ordered off the menu. The made to order items we tried were the omelets, french toast, eggs benedict, and green chile cheese grits.

The omelet I ordered was nicely prepared and filled with goat cheese, mushrooms, and spinach. The fillings did not overwhelm the tasty omelet and it paired well with the green chile cheese grits. You kind of have to order the Green Chile Cheese Grits. Even if you’re not a grits fan, they just might convert you. I personally think they’re heaven in a bowl.

The French Toast did not disappoint. Golden fried, thick cut slices of Brioche bread smothered in syrup and powdered sugar- hard to go wrong. My kids can vouch for their yum factor.

If you’re an Eggs Benedict fan don’t pass up the chance to try Lambert’s take on the classic. They come topped with Prime Rib and a Chipotle Hollandaise. If you aren’t feeling adventurous don’t worry they also offer the traditional version of this dish.

Leave a little room for their amazing desserts. The Coconut Cream Pie looked spectacular and tasted even better. Just a decadently delicious dessert with a sumptuous filling and a light as air topping. The Red Velvet Cake proved just as tasty as the Coconut Cream Pie with a pleasant texture – although I would’ve loved more of the icing on top.

If you’re looking for the ultimate brunch experience in Fort Worth head to Lambert’s.
The brunch at Lambert’s is truly a treat. We visited to celebrate my Mother-in-law’s birthday and it struck just the right note of upscale yet comfortable and casual. The food strikes a similar chord and keeps a balance between rustic and elegant. I’d definitely recommend it for special occasions or if you’re just looking for a culinary treat and a relaxing spot to enjoy time with friends.

Ok folks it’s that time of year again to shine your boots and get to the Fort Worth Stock Show. The Fort Worth Stock show begins this weekend (January 13) and runs through February 4, all the details can be found at the Fort Worth Show and Rodeo website. For smartphone users they even have an app this year. If you want something other than festival food when visiting the Stock Show or the Rodeo check out one of the many restaurants or Food Trucks near the Stock Show grounds. Here’s a list of spots (most withing walking distance of the event).

Food Trucks:
Fort Worth Food Park
Check out Fort Worth’s only food truck park if you’re headed to the Stock Show with kids or a crowd. With a choice of 6 food trucks there’s something for everyone. Very kid friendly. Check their schedule for details on the trucks. 2509 Weisenberger St. (behind the Target in Montgomery Plaza)

Taco Heads
Taco Heads Food Truck would be my go-to spot for after Rodeo munchies. Wash down their delicious tacos with a beverage from 7th Haven. Carnitas are the way to go. 2700 W. 7th Street (behind 7th Haven).

Sassy Hot Dogs
For late night food swing by Sassy Hot Dogs Food Truck behind Poag Mahone’s Pub for Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, and other yummy treats. 700 Carrol Street

Mexican Food:
Revolver Taco Lounge
One of my favorite spots. BYOB or BYOTequila (for a mean margarita). Order up a couple of rounds of tacos to go with their delicious guacamole and chips. 2822 W 7th St

Hacienda San Miguel
Hacienda San Miguel brings Modern Mexican cuisine to the W7th development. My favorites include the Seafood Chile Poblano, Flautas de Pollo. Don’t worry they also serve a mean ribeye. 2948 Crockett Street

La Familia
Home of the famous handshake as you walk in. La Familia’s cheese enchiladas and other Mexican specialties satisfy your Tex-Mex cravings. Kid friendly. 841 Foch

Gloria’s
Tex Mex dishes as well as Salvadoran dishes can be found at this popular spot. Nice Margaritas too. 2600 W. 7th Street.

BBQ:
Angelo’s
The Stock Show and barbeque go hand in hand. Angelo’s is a Fort Worth barbeque institution and some say Angelo’s is the best in town. You be the judge, try out a combo platter and be sure to include ribs. Don’t worry there’s beer to wash it all down with. Kid friendly. 2533 White Settlement Road

Railhead
This perennially popular barbeque spot serves up barbeque classics in a fun atmosphere. 2900 Montgomery Street

Upscale Texas Cuisine
Lambert’s
Lambert’s is the perfect spot for all you urban cowboys. Modern decor with cowboy touches such as saddles from the ceiling. The food is unmistakably Texas with grilled and smoked meat selections. The t-bone with enchilada and sea bass are my faves. If you’re really hungry check out their impressive Sunday Brunch. Small lounge area near the bar for enjoying cocktails.

Tilman’s
Tilman’s fun spin on cowboy cuisine makes it a perfect spot to hit before or after a visit to the Stock Show. Don’t forget to save some room for their table side s’mores. 2933 Crockett

Fast Casual/ Kid Friendly

Italian/ Meditteranean
Patrizio
You’ll find hearty pizza and pasta options at Patrizio’s. 2932 Crockett

During the week they have an amazing lunch buffet. Their other menu items are delicious as well including the lamb chops and the roasted chicken. 2973 Crockett Street

Burgers:
Love Shack
Burgers get the Tim Love treatment and are delicious as well as a good deal. Kid friendly and appealing to adults as well with specialty cocktails. The outside space has plenty of heaters going during cold weather. 817 Matisse, Ste. 445

Fine Dining:
Lanny’s Alta Cocina Mexicana
Lanny’s is one of my favorite spots for fine dining and a great stop before heading out to the Rodeo. 3405 W 7th Street

Eddie V’s
If you’re looking to spend big bucks on a big steak this is the place. 2901 Crockett

Brownstone

Times Ten
