Hot Box Biscuit Club

Biscuits and brunch anyone? If you answered with a heck yeah, please read on! We all know brunch is quite possibly the most perfect meal combining the best of breakfast and lunch. We now have a stellar option with the opening of Hot Box Biscuit Club. The best part is it’s not just for weekend brunching but for weekday indulging as well.

Hot Box Biscuit Club
Hot Box Biscuit Club on South Main

Hot Box Biscuit Club began as the hottest food pop-up in town and is now a brick-and-mortar space in a spot that couldn’t be more perfect on South Main. They are in good company with places like The Bearded Lady, Four Sisters and Game Theory who’ve also staked their claim on the block. Local pastry Chef Sarah Hooten joined culinary forces with Chef Matt Mobley to form Hot Box Biscuit Club as a series of pop-ups that happened in different locations in Fort Worth two and a half years ago.

Word of mouth about their pop-ups spread quickly. Hooten and Mobley focused on their favorite style of food which is Southern cooking. They bring their sense of fun to all the dishes which is clear in the execution and in small details like what the dishes are named. Hip hop and 90’s throwback references are a common occurrence on their menus and t-shirts. This all adds to the fun and charm of the Hot Box Biscuit Club experience.

Hot Box Biscuit Club

Thanks to loyal and repeat diners who spread the word, their email list grew. That’s how the pair let the public know about their events which were selling out 300 seats in a matter of minutes.

Now, we no longer have to rely on our ability to quickly reply to their emails for a coveted seat at one of their pop-ups. This week they open for business on the ever growing stretch of South Main. Yes, you can get your biscuit fix just about any day of the week now!

Interior Hot Box Biscuit Club

The light filled space overlooking South Main couldn’t be better suited for their casual and fun cuisine. Exposed brick walls and red accents add warmth, charm and coziness to the space.

When you arrive, you place your order at the front and then you are given a Selena (#bidibidibombom) themed buzzer. You pick up your food at the kitchen counter after your buzzer alerts you. While you wait you can serve yourself your non-alcoholic drinks and grab your set-ups. Boozy brunchers can grab their drinks from the bar.

Their menu is a greatest hits of all the dishes that built their buzz in Fort Worth. It’s divided into different sections: Bigs, smalls, sides and extras. Bigs are their sizeable biscuit sandwiches that include the Paris Hilton which is a magical combo of sugar cane brined crispy fried chicken, Louisiana hot sauce and honey whipped butter on a buttermilk biscuit.

The Paris Hilton

The smalls are appetizer-sized portions and include their cheeky take on a Southern classic, Cornflake Fried Green Tomatoes. The tomatoes in this traditional dish are fried and pickle-brined for a slightly sour effect that almost makes it feel like you’re eating a large fried pickle chip. The over the top toppings are literally over the top. Scoops of Vernon’s pimento cheese, a sprinkling of corn flakes and drizzles of ranch dust and dip complete the tasty mix of flavors and textures.

Other notable Smalls include the “Devil Went down to Georgia” which is a deviled egg with a sour cream based filling topped with notorious P.I.G (their house-cured bacon), pickled jalapeno and ranch dust. Also on the smalls menu are the Puff Daddies, which are their house fried chicharrones. These crunchy snacks are the perfect accompaniment to one of their delicious cocktails.

Sides include mac and cheese, collard greens, grits, fried okra and several other items. The menu items will change so you will always have different options and a different experience. The stewed green beans I tried just completely floored me! The description says “Like grandmas…but maybe better”.

Stewed Green Beans

While my grandma was more of a homemade tortilla maker, my husbands family has Southern roots so I’ve tasted my fair share of green beans. The Hot Box version has the perfect melt in your mouth texture without being overly mushy and the seasonings really just take it up a notch. But sssshhh, I can’t let the Southern part of my family know.

And please, save room for dessert. Or make room, because… pie. With tempting options like Mary’s Chocolate Cream Pie and Sarah’s Buttermilk Pie you will not want to pass up the decadent pie selections.

Hot Box Biscuit Club
Chef Sarah Hooten and Chef Matt Mobley

Casual, comforting Southern food gets the brunch treatment at Hot Box Biscuit Club. Not only that, but at the hands of two creative and talented chefs using high quality ingredients and making just about everything from scratch, diners are in for a delicious experience. When I spoke to the chefs they said they wanted to make affordable and approachable food so that you don’t just visit for special occasions but that you visit frequently. They’ve created crave-worthy food with soul that will not only draw me back often but many more folks as well.

Lola’s Local Farmers Market

Is there such a thing as a Rock n Roll Farmers Market?! I’d venture to say that the Lola’s Local Farmers Market that takes place every second Sunday at Lola’s Trailer Park is as close as you’ll get.

Morris Holdahl at Lola’s Local Farmers Market

This monthly market has everything I love about Fort Worth in one place. Food, local artisans and artists AND live music. It doesn’t get more eclectic and dare I say funky as this market.

You get the feeling you are in someone’s back yard strolling through the outdoor space. The live music lends a party atmosphere. Oh and the bar at the Saloon is open. So there’s no reason not to take a seat, enjoy some music and sit a spell on a Sunday afternoon. They also have a food truck onsite.

Lola’s Saloon

There’s a variety of vendors with a mix of fresh produce and artisanal food items. There’s plenty of food products to buy that are locally made. Some of the items you might find include locally made cheeses, spice blends and rubs, tortillas, fried pies, cheesecakes, preserves and pickles and finally my favorite thing, coffee. You will even find local grass fed beef.

Cowtown Farmers Market

Eat Local. It’s a goal to aspire to. How do you make it happen? In Fort Worth we are fortunate enough to have a weekly producer-only farmers market that’s been around for the last 28 years. The Cowtown Farmers Market takes place every Saturday and sometimes Wednesdays at the Weatherford Traffic Circle on the westside of Fort Worth.

Cowtown Farmers Market Fort Worth
Cowtown Farmers Market

Fort Worth’s original Producer only market

Cowtown Farmers Market is Fort Worth’s original producer-only market. That means they only allow vendors to sell items that are either grown, raised or produced within 150 miles of Fort Worth. That’s pretty darn local. In other words, when you think of a traditional Farmers market this it. Farm to table dining, as long as you cook it, is in reach.

Cowtown Farmers Market

If quality ingredients along with supporting the local economy matter to you the farmers market is a great way to put those values into action.

Cowtown Farmers Market

If you frequent the market enough you’ll learn what’s in season. Most likely you’ll learn from the farmer who’s grown it and can tell you all about what you’re buying. For instance, there’s no better tomato or peach than the ones that are found at the Farmers Market. Seriously!

Cowtown Farmers Market

Vendors at Cowtown Farmers Market

In addition the freshest produce possible, there’s many local vendors to support as well. Cheese, coffee, soaps, honey, fresh cut flowers, bread, soup, tamales are just a few of the other items you’ll find at the Cowtown Farmers Market. Some of the vendors have a presence at the Clearfork Farmers Markets as well. It’s easy to get cooking inspiration from all the great ingredients.

Taste Project : Fall Menu

Dining with dignity. What does that mean? For most of us in Fort Worth, it’s what we are accustomed to. We buy our weekly groceries and prepare them for ourselves or our family. Or we go out to eat at a restaurant or save up to eat out for a special occasion. At Taste Project diners pay what they can. It’s Fort Worth’s first non-profit restaurant and pay what you can restaurant.

At Taste Project in the Near Southside, they acknowledge that not everyone knows where their next meal will come from. According to their website, “…in Tarrant County, 36 percent of this food insecure population live above the poverty level and receive no government help”.

Taste Project Mission

Taste Project seeks to address hunger issues from a community perspective with their non-profit restaurant model. They do this by providing a meal for whoever walks in. Unlike any other restaurant in Fort Worth there are no prices on the menu. In this case at Taste Project you either pay what you can afford, pay what you would typically pay, or pay what what you would normally pay plus a little extra.

Chef Jeff Williams at Taste Project

A small staff runs the restaurant with a group of volunteers. In the kitchen, you’ll find Chef Jeff Williams who is also the founder and President of Taste Project. He prepares meals that are healthy, hearty and delicious.

Fall Lunch and Brunch Menu

I got a preview of their Fall Lunch and Brunch menu recently. Their lunch menu focuses on small plates and sandwiches. The turkey burger provided hints of fall flavors with the addition of mushrooms and seasoning to the patty. The soft bun and pomegranate aioli bring the burger together nicely. The Reuben sandwich features a delicious house-made corned beef and sauerkraut filling that complements the toasted rye bread beautifully.

Reuben Sandwich at Taste Project

Additionally, they have a nice selection of brunch dishes served on Saturdays and Sundays from 10AM – 2PM that include French toast, soups, salads and sandwiches. One of the dishes I sample, was the huevos verdes. These small tostadas have flavorful Southwestern influence toppings that include green salsa and queso fresco. The egg, bacon and sweet potato toppings contrast nicely with the crispy tostada shells.

Huevos Verdes at Taste Project

The well thought out menu options are appealing for a variety of consumers in a comfortable and enjoyable atmosphere. The pay what you can model may be new to some, but it’s not complicated. Pay what you can and if you can afford a little more go ahead and do that. It’s not often you can enjoy a meal and pay it forward. Taste Project, let’s you do just that.

Taste Project is also hosting a variety of celebrity servers in acknowledgement of Hunger Action Month. Check out their Facebook page to see when the Fort Worth Firefighters or our own mayor, Betsy Price, will be serving.

Game Theory

Fort Worth’s first gaming lounge offers excellent food options and a fun gaming experience. Game Theory blipped on my radar a few months back when I heard that not only would Fort Worth get its first gaming lounge but that they would be serving food, specifically savory hand pies. We finally got our chance to check them out last month a few weeks after their grand opening and enjoyed everything about the experience with an unexpected surprise.

Game Theory opened last month in the growing area of South Main. Home to several hot spots including Four Sisters Taste of Vietnam. The large bar at Game Theory serves as the focal point for the modern, industrial vibe of the place, you’ll also see shelves of games in the front and back sections of the lounge. You pay a $5 library fee per person to play a game (or games) from their 500 options! If you spend more than $10 on food/drink that fee is waived. It’s easy to spend $10 on food/drink with lots of enticing and affordable food options in addition to a great cocktail selection.

If you don’t know where to start in choosing a game, the games are organized from easiest to most strategic and the game guides can further help you make a choice. On our past two trips we chose games we had never played before, which wasn’t a problem because the game guides can explain to you the basic rules of most games (but not the super strategic ones).

Carcassone Game at Game Theory

Game Theory offers some great food options. They have what I would call heavy snack food and some nice shareable selections. I wouldn’t come here for a full meal unless you wanted to try multiple dishes. My family of two teenage boys and husband were hungry on our last visit so we tried a little bit of everything. We had the Japanese pot pie, the al pastor and the Aussie mini pies, the sausage party, white cheddar queso and the classic popcorn chicken.

Japanese Stew Pot Pie at Game Theory

The pot pies and the the mini pies had a nice flaky and crispy crust with creative fillings and they did not disappoint. The Japanese pot pie was a favorite with spin on a comfort food classic. The mini pies are small enough that you can easily try more than one – the Aussie filling tasted similar to what I’ve had in Sydney and the Al Pastor really worked as a savory pie filling (and kudos for taking this traditional taco filling into new territory).

Mini Pies at Game Theory

The sausage party is just that- 3 artisan sausages served with condiments-you can choose from traditional sausages like bratwurst and andouille or more unique options like lemongrass or beyond meat bratwurst. The popcorn chicken was also a hit at our table.

Popcorn Chicken at Game Theory

Game Theory offers a solid craft cocktail menu. I tried their version of the margarita, the Zarrow Shuffle, which surprised me when it arrived thanks to its purple hue and color changing block ice cube. Just like the food, the drinks are well executed without taking themselves too seriously. They offer a small but curated selection of Craft brews on draft and canned with several Near Southside Breweries represented.

The service is great considering your wait person is also your game guide. There’s a console on the table that is connected to a smart watch your game guide wears. If you need anything you press the appropriate button on the console for more food, drinks, or have a question about the game and your guide will be alerted through their smart watch. Also, they do no accept cash, so make sure you have a debit or credit card for payment.

I’d have to say the most surprising thing about the whole experience was that it’s a great way to engage with people – in other words it’s hard to be on your phone when your trying to dominate a board game. We found a new board game, Carcassone, that we absoluletly love. I love the trifecta of food, connection and fun that Game Theory brings to the table.

Restaurant Week happens from August 5-11. Several restaurants will continue their special three course menus through August 18, 25 or even Labor Day. It’s best to check the official DFW Restaurant list website to confirm these dates. Some restaurants even offer a lunch option for $25. If you have further questions, check out their FAQ.

“Many restaurants offer a FREE additional “Fourth Course” dinner menu item when you present your Fourth Course Certificate. Beginning July 9, spend $10 or more at any FedEx Office location in DFW to receive a Fourth Course Certificate at the register with your qualifying receipt. Check out restaurants offering the Fourth Course on the official DFW Restaurant Week list.”

Melted : Ice Cream + Beer

Ice cream and ice cold beer both bring relief to hot summer days, especially in Fort Worth. In a natural and super cool collaboration local brewery, Martin House Brewing Company, combines with Fort Worth’s craft ice cream shop, Melt Ice Creams, to bring you Melted, a strawberry and waffle cone ice cream ale. Martin House Brewing Company released this limited-edition ice cream beer August 2.

This new ice cream beer brings together happy hints of summer with strawberry and waffle cone flavors. I was a little unsure about what to expect from a brew inspired by ice cream. I found it surprisingly refreshing and balanced with a great aroma. It’s also an easy to sip summer beer to enjoy on a porch with friends.

Ice cream beer

Martin House Brewing Company brewed the beer with strawberry puree and crushed Melt’s signature waffle cones and included it in the grain bill. The ale is 5.5% ABV. You can grab a six pack of Melted locally at Central Market, Trader Joe’s or Spec’s. This is a limited release which means you should get some now while it’s available. It’s a great way to survive the blazing Fort Worth summer in style.
